Power Dressing

My friend Busani asked me to run a post on office wear and how far one can go when it comes to being fashionable but still maintaining professionalism. Busani and I are both lawyers so we work in very conservative environments were frumpy pants or skirt suits are the order of the day. I am not a fan of the old school pants suit with the bootleg flare at all, its not flattering, I don't think it makes you look "powerful", in fact it just says to me that you don't know how to pick the right size for your shape. Trends actually show more colour, prints, embellishing and patterns when it comes to office wear and most importantly good tailoring.

I suppose the answer to how to dress for work all depends on what environment you are in. If you are in a creative environment, I guess anything goes and there is more room for you to push the boundaries with your work style. So bright coloured pants, full on leather skirts and green shoes if you will.

I sort of do my own thing when it comes to office wear obviously striving to be office appropriate and not force Human Resources hand over my wardrobe. There are certain rules that should be a staple though if you are trying remain professional. I think under no circumstances should your belly button or bare midriff feature in your work attire, that's a no-no!

Also be careful with hemlines, I 'll be the first to admit I love short skirts and short fitted dresses but I always pair up those items with opaque tights or stockings because no one needs to be ogling at my thighs in the middle of a consultation! Also low back or backless dresses are too sexy for the boardroom, keep those for another occasion not a dull day sitting behind your desk!

Take a look at my interpretation of what office looks work that are colourful, tasteful and professional.

Mens Wear: Something for the fellas

A friend of mine asked me to post menswear ideas for Winter because he wasn't sure what to wear or how to put pieces together to create an overall good look. I have been reluctant to post fashion pointers for men because I actually have no cooking clue about menswear, it's one of those things, if a guy looks good, he looks good but as far as fashion and trends go, I am literally clueless.

I gave in though and here are some ideas of what I think is hot for Winter for the fellas.

I have always loved men in casual wear from probably the age of 19 and as I got older I thought I would get over it but even after all these years I am still a sneakers kinda girl when it comes to mens style.

Men have it easy though, mens fashion doesn't change as often and as quickly as womens fashion, making it a whole lot easier for them to find what really works and looks good on them without it becoming dated or overdone.

Birthday vibe

Monday was my birthday and in spite of it being on a Monday, it was a good birthday. I had a really relaxed day, even at work and I felt all mushy inside from all the phone calls, e-mails, texts, visits, virtual and actual hugs. In spite of my mother's fears and concerns about my current marital status, I am feeling quite positive about what this new year holds for me, I see good things to come. In celebration of this new year ahead of me, I am sporting a new look.

My new pixie cut
My awesome friends Tiyani and Zani took me out for a lovely dinner that night at one of my favourite restaurants, Metro at Benmore... *so many good memories there*

Here are some birthday pictures including the most adorable flowers ever that I recieved as a gift. You will note the heavy coat and the scarf, as luck would have it,  every year it seems that Winter decides to show its full face on the 10th of June, so my birthdays are always icy cold...*sigh*

I also finally went to see the Great Gatsby...MIND BLOWN! That film literally left me haunted for two days, I felt like I wanted to go back and fix everything so that there wouldn't be such a heartbreaking ending but alas I am not F. Scott Fitzgerald or Baz Luhrmann.

I can't get over the theme song by Lana Del Rey "Young and Beautiful" and it so appropriate now that I am getting older... the lyrics are haunting.

All I want for my birthday is a...

My birthday is in a few days, 4 days to be exact and like all my birthdays since I hit the 25 mark, I am always a quite anxious because I feel OLD! Most of my friends are slightly younger than me and they have taken to this ageing thing like ducks to water, they've all been very excited to turn 25 and are even more excited to turn 30! I will be dead honest, that number sparks a genuine fear in me... for a lot of reasons. It feels like I was 17 just the other day and here I am 10 years later and things aren't as rosy as I had pictured in my then teenage mind. For one thing I would never have guessed that in 10 years I would be a debt-ridden statistic!

This year, I am trying to ease myself into this pending birthday and take the time out to reflect and appreciate the life I have. Without sounding too sombre, growing older is in fact a privilege that many young folk don't always get to experience.

I decided to compile a list of 27 things that I am grateful for, in celebration of my 27th year...

  1. The most wonderful parents in the WHOLE world
  2. Crazy but oh so loving siblings
  3. My favourite and only nephew, Ibrahim
  4. Friends... far too many to even list, who allow me the liberty to just be myself
  5. Health, yes I have gained a few kilos this year but I am healthy with more curves than I know what to do with
  6. Education...my mama didn't raise no fool!
  7. A promising career
  8. A challenging but rewarding job... these are indeed tough economic times
  9. A roof over my head in the form of my gorgeous apartment
  10. I am almost debt free... hanging tough
  11. The arts, literature and film
  12. CHOCOLATE
  13. Tea in any shape or form
  14. Pizza, as far as I am concerned there is nothing yummier!
  15. SHOES, SHOES, SHOES, I can never have enough!
  16. The freedom to choose who and what I want to be
  17. The ability to speak my mind
  18. Being alive in a time where free thought and creativity are encouraged
  19. Music... From Beyonce to Khadja Nin, even Two Chainz and his nonsensical lyrics
  20. Make-up, I simply just love it, all of it
  21. A heart to travel and explore this gorgeous planet
  22. Fun nights out dancing with my friends
  23. Glasses of crisp Rose wine
  24. Romantic comedies...what can I say, I am a cheesefest
  25. VERSATILE HAIR, see my ode to hair here
  26. I am an African and proud
  27. No matter what happens in life, there is always a chance to do better and learn from the mistakes of the past
With all this said here is my birthday wish list, nothing too fancy you know...

  • Black patent leather pointed pumps
  • A bouquet of pink roses
  • Black ankle boots
  • An Aztec print jacket
  • Rose gold watch
  • Daisy by Marc Jacobs eau de toilette
  • Ipad 3
  • MAC Powder
Not gonna happen right? A girl can dream *sigh*...

The Chill

It is pretty darn cold out in Jo'burg at the moment, especially in the mornings and late evenings. As a result this girl is really struggling to part ways with her bed everyday. If I could, I would work from my bed all Winter but alas, that is not possible. In case, like me, you have been struggling to put together simple, comfortable outfits that don't leave you feeling like you are from the Antarctic but still keep the cold at bay, here are a few easy trends that just might do the trick.

Striped knitwear...

Aztec print coats...

Layering with a denim shirt...

Pair up your striped knitwear with skinny jeans or boyfriend jeans for a casual look. For more chilly winter afternoons, pair up opaque tights and ankle boots with a mini dress and layer up with a denim shirt and a bold statement coat.
