Mercedes Benz Fashion Week: Johannesburg

Tonight kicks off the opening of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Johannesburg, #MBFW2013. As tears well up in my eyes it pains me have to say that I will not be attending any shows this week due to my current financial situation. For those who are fortunate enough to be going get ready to enjoy the spectacular showcase of some of South Africa's best designers. Here is a little taste of what to expect from some of my favourite local designers.

Thula Sindi, one of my favourites, will be showing on Friday, 8 March 2013. Tickets are all sold out, his popularity is quite evident. You are definitely in for a treat if you have tickets to his show. Flowing fabrics, sequins, leather, subtle tones and an all around celebration of the female form.

David Tlale is also showing on Friday 8 March 2013. A firm favourite of mine, his shows always showcase colour, texture and drama. His collections are always unique without being over the top and as you can guess tickets were sold out a while ago. This man understands fashion in a way many wish they could.

On Saturday night, 9 March 2013, Gavin Rajah will be showing his latest offering. He is the patriarch when it comes to couture designs in South Africa. His flowing gowns are highly sought after by celebrities and high society. His garments exude luxury and opulence. Gavin Rajah's foray into the international market has yielded widespread recognition.

I hope this little snippet has wet your appetite enough to get you excited about MBFW and even more excited about the standard of fashion in South Africa. Support for African designers is definitely a movement that I am all about. Africa rising indeed.
